Do not (blindly) trust Ahref Domain Rating (DR)

domain-ratingsAhrefs is about to release a new formula for their Domain Rating. Although it definately looks like an improvement the fact remains that the calculation is still full of flaws that leaves you with a domain authority rating that that is, at best, just not very accurate.

So what is the problem?
In this post I will explain some of the problems with this, and similar types of domain authority ratings …

Google Ranking Factor Studies Debugged

Over the years a great number of studies have tried to show which Google ranking factors are the most important. Recently another big SEO Ranking Factors study came out – this time from the tool provider SEMRush.

Although I very much appreciate all SEO studies as a basis for discussions about what might be important ranking factors most of them suffer from many of the same basic flaws and often conclusions are made that are just not valid and most certainly don’t align with my professional experience about what is actually working.

The most recent study from SEMRush is better than most but many of the problems remain the same. In this post I will look closer at a few of the main problems and why I think the real value is limited.

SEO: Why JavaScript Suck (Most of the Time)

Inspired by Jacob Nielsen renowned 1996 blog post “Why Frames Suck (Most of the Time), I can’t help it – JavaScript suck too. At least when it comes to SEO.

Despite what many developers believe, using JavaScript Frameworks and client side JavaScript rendering, is still not a reliable method for publishing content and links intended for the search engines to crawl and index.

But I understand the confusion. Google is backing one of the most popular JavaScript frameworks Angular and have publicly said that Google can now crawl, render and index content and links published with client side JavaScript.

The problem is, that it is simply not true. At least not all the time. Google may sometimes cache and index JavaScript and they may sometimes not. And when they don’t you pay the price. Google give no guarantee client side JavaScript will always work and there is no way to appeal your case.

In this post I will take a close look at why JavaScript Suck for SEO and a large recent JavaScript SEO study.

Understanding Google Algorithms – Read Between the Lines

Googles search algorithms is a huge and very complex monster that we, as SEOs, have always tried to reverse engineer and understand to the best of our abilities. The better we understand how the hundreds of parameters involved work the better we can help our clients rank their websites in Google.

So naturally, when Google publicly speak about how elements of their algorithm work we listen. And they actually quite often do that – at their webmaster blog, at industry conferences and in interviews.

But here is the catch – you can blindly trust what Google say.

I am not saying Google is (always) lying. Technically what they say may be true (although it is definitely not always the case!) but the effect may be different than what they try to imply.

In this post I will explore a few examples of Google algorithmic comments and how you can learn to read between the lines.

CPA SEO? 5 Reasons Performance Based SEO may not be right for you

CPA SEOA CPA SEO deal may sound like a tempting option. After all, with a pure performance deal you only pay for the value the SEO-provider creates for you and not for the actual time spend on the work involved.

But is a CPA SEO deal always the best option? What are the things you should consider before making this type of deal? Are you doing it for the right reasons?

Over the past many years I have engaged in many CPA SEO deals but I have refused even more. Most often because the client was not fully aware of the consequences of this type deal and was not willing to accept the fair terms I put forward.

In this post I will take a close  look at things you should consider before considering a CPA SEO deal …

– The Top 5 Reason a Performance Based SEO deal may not be right for you.
